While I appreciate this production , I can promise you, a jibaro woman that I am, that my mother and grands were not made up. They were barefooted with clothes that were simple. They washed their clothes in the spring, used an outhouse and from what I understand, the people had law. So the machete was used in cases of child harm and other related acts. The jibaro people rejected colonialism and I cannot see them being so coordinated. My family was illiterate and ignorant but humble and hardworking. I guess in a way this is a washed down take but it is not accurate.

Typical US government propaganda which does not tell the whole story and makes itself look like the savior to Puerto Rico. The island was invaded because the Navy wanted an outpost in the Atlantic, McKinley did not want to do it but the brass talked him into it. To this day, the US continues to Americanize the citizens, demonizes the Spanish while itself keeping the island a colony for big pharma and big US corporations. Shame!

The United States (US) has held Puerto Rico as her colony for the past 125 years, and against international law. In the same year that the US entered World War II after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, the US made the following propaganda film about a so-called “democracy” in Puerto Rico. Many people don’t know that the Treaty of Paris of 1898, still in effect today, states that the rights of the Puerto Ricans shall be determined by the US. How could this film then talk about democracy in Puerto Rico? On the contrary, the treaty makes it very clear that Puerto Ricans are US slaves! Such is the case that the US has consistently ignored 42 United Nations resolutions asking her to immediately return Puerto Rico’s sovereignty to the Puerto Ricans. Far from Puerto Rico enjoying democracy, the US is committing a crime against humanity by refusing de decolonize her! Many Nazi’s were executed for committing crimes against humanity as a result of the Nuremberg Trials. The US, however, has enjoyed immunity from her crimes thus far. US colonialism in Puerto Rico will persist, until the 9 million Puerto Ricans worldwide engage in permanent resistance to force the US to comply with international law. Isn’t it ironic that the US says she cares more about Taiwan’s inalienable right to their self-determination than Puerto Rico’s? Joseph Goebbels learned a lot from US propaganda. However, like with the Third Reich, her propaganda is becoming more naked. Propaganda said a million times is still propaganda.

As a Latin American, I can confirm that Puerto Rico is the most disdained and mocked society in the hemisphere: They've never sought their independence because they've always preferred to live with a great power that pays their bills and protects them; which is why after the Spanish-American war puertoricans went overnight from being loyal Spaniards to being American patriots without any shame. And their so-called "culture" is a repulsive mixture of American and Latino cultures and the way they for instance use English words in their vocabularies is both cheap and pathetically disgusting. It's often joked that the United States is Puerto Rico's boyfriend and owner.

Moron, they never sought their independence because they were an overseas province of Spain together with Cuba. They with Cuba fought for their independence together. The Puerto Ricans that you mention that use English words in their vocabulary must be the ones in the States. Surprise! every Hispanic, Russian, Italian etc., etc. in the states include English into their vocabulary. Puerto Rico did not ask to be taken over by the US. Who are you anyway?

PR's form of governtment in spanish is called FREE ASSOCIATED STATE. That's a misnomer or more accurately a big lie. It isn't FREE (free would mean an independent nation) It isn't ASSOCIATED (to be associated it would have to be an independent nation first and then work out a deal equally beneficial for both sides). And certainly it isn't a STATE (like New York or California), we all know that. Otherwise there wouldn't be a need for a political party (PNP) who seeks statehood. It's a colony, (some call it the oldest colony in the world) and that's why there's a political party and a few other organizations seeking independence. That's why Washington refused to accept the spanish translation which is ESTADO LIBRE ASOCIADO and decided to call it COMMONWEALTH instead. Whether that's good or not is up to each person to decide.
